Hi Rob,

Long time no see!

I learned a lot from your podcast three or four years ago when I was studying English. Besides the grammar and sentence structures, what really captivated me were the many interesting topics you talked about. I remember leaving a few comments on your episodes back then.

Last year, I visited my wife’s sister’s family, who live in North Croydon. If I remember correctly, that’s not too far from where your family lives. We took a trip to a dam located northwest of Lilydale and drove along a country road. It was a winding and peaceful route, lined with tall trees. It reminded me of the scenes you once described in your podcast—riding your motorcycle in the rain through those beautiful roads. That image stayed with me. In that moment, I felt a special connection between us, even though we’ve never met in person.

Through your episodes, I’ve come to learn so much about your life and experiences. To me, you’re not a stranger—you’re like an old friend.

Just wanted to write and let you know that I’m back and will continue listening to your podcast and enjoying your new insights.

Warm regards,
Leon

In reply to <a href="https://slowenglish.info/podcast-162-time-zones-in-australia/#comment-5276">Dep Ni</a>.

Hi Dep,
Many thanks for your very interesting comment. I was not aware that China makes use of only 1 time zone in such a large country. I can see why it is done, but I can also imagine that having sunset at 11.00pm must take some getting used to. Our daylight saving system has also been controversial. It has been tried in WA and QLD previously, but the people voted to go back to standard time. Oh well, I guess our business owners and workers just get used to dealing with 5 different time zones in summer.
Best regards from Melbourne.

Hi Rob,
Another very interesting podcast. Entire China, just like Western Australia, belongs to the same time zone (Eastern 8th Time Zone, UTC + 8.00). So for me, who often returns to China, the jet lag during each trip is not obvious because there is only a two-hour time difference between Brisbane (UTC+10.00), the Australian city where I live, and Hangzhou, the Chinese city I visit. This is my luck. Unlike Australia, although China spans five time zones geographically (UTC+5.00 - UTC+9.00), it only has one legal single standard time, which is Beijing Time UTC+8, to simplify the management of time across the country. Therefore, for instance, in summer in most areas of Xinjiang Province (UTC+5.00), the westernmost part of China, it is not surprising that its sunset time is 11.00pm. Regarding the daylight-saving time system, China implemented it in 1986. However, due to insufficient social adaptability, insignificant energy-saving effects and some other reasons, this system was abolished in 1992. It's a bit of a pity for a country lacking energy.
Hope you continue to do great things with your podcasts.
